To celebrate National Nurse Practitioners Week (November 10-16), we wanted to highlight our great Nurse Practitioners by asking them fun questions about their position. Here’s what we asked everyone:
- How did you know you wanted to be a nurse practitioner?
- What has been one of the most rewarding moments you’ve had as a Nurse Practitioner over the past year?
- What’s a motto or saying you live by that influences how interact with and treat patients?
- And, just for fun, we asked – what is your favorite part of decorating for the holidays?

Amy Aeschliman
How did you know you wanted to be a NP? I always thought about it. When taking care of heart transplant patients, their visit in the cath lab was treated like a primary care visit and I loved that they got everything they needed right there at that visit. All of the specialists came to them, labs completed, vaccines up dated, ect. My dad had always wanted me to go back to school, and after he passed I used my inheritance to help pay for grad school.
Most rewarding part of being a NP over the past year: I love seeing my patients bring in their families and friend to establish. It makes me feel like i’m doing something right!
Life motto or saying: All bleeding stops eventually. just kidding, kind of. I try to meet my patients where they are at. Meaning, I have no idea what it feels like to be homeless, but i can sure appreciate the difficulties involved in getting care, medications, and follow up that is needed. I am thankful for all of the fantastic opportunities I have been given, and realize there are many out there who have never had opportunities presented to them and have several barriers to accessing quality care.
Favorite part of decorating for the holidays: I love getting all of it out of storage and all of the good memories associated with each item.

How did you know you wanted to be a NP? I had an overwhelming desire to help people achieve their best health, with compassion and true caring.
Most rewarding part of being a NP over the past year: Meeting new people, helping them with their healthcare needs, and finding out about them and their families. True caring connections!
Life motto or saying: Treat all people as you would like your mother, children, and/or grandchildren treated!
Favorite part of decorating for the holidays: I love decorating our real Christmas Tree, we cut down together every year!

How did you know you wanted to be a NP? I always knew I wanted to be a nurse and work with children. When I worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit I saw so many preventable reasons that children were coming in critically ill. It was then that I knew I wanted to work from the provider end to educate families and hopefully prevent this from happening to children.
Most rewarding part of being a NP over the past year: There have been so many it is hard to pick just one moment. It is so rewarding when you see children and families grow and flourish. When you see that light bulb go on after you have provided education. The same when you help to educate a new pediatric provider and see them grow into their role of helping children and families and keeping them safe.
Life motto or saying: My motto is kindness, empathy, non-judgemental and non-biased approach. We never know what is happening in someone’s life, but finding strengths in everyone is so important.
Favorite part of decorating for the holidays: I love all of it! It is such a fun time of year that lifts everyone’s spirits. I’m always sad when it is time to take decorations down.

How did you know you wanted to be a NP? I have wanted to be a nurse since age 12. At the time I decided to become a nurse practitioner, I was a faculty member at a School of Nursing in Illinois and was asked to go back to school because they needed more NP faculty.
Most rewarding part of being a NP over the past year: When a person comes to see me with significant health issues and we are able to work together to improve their health and their quality of life.
Life motto or saying: Treat others as I would like to be treated.
Favorite part of decorating for the holidays: Having my grandchildren help put up the tree.

How did you know you wanted to be a NP? When I started working with one.
Favorite part of decorating for the holidays: Looking at the Christmas lights and decorations that someone else has put together 🙂

How did you know you wanted to be a NP? I had been a nurse for over 20 years and began to see the RN role taking on more and more tasks that were not direct patient care. I became a nurse in order to take care of people face to face, not on a phone or computer. I decided to go back to school to become a family nurse practitioner in order to care for people one on one in a setting that I would be needed.
Most rewarding part of being a NP over the past year: It is always rewarding when patients return and the plan of care we had established is working well for them.
Life motto or saying: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel” -Maya Angelou
Favorite part of decorating for the holidays: The memories of our daughters at Christmas as they were growing up, the ornaments they made and the activities that made them happy. Now we are able to add to those memories with our Grandson.
Analei Whitlock
How did you know you wanted to be a NP? I worked inpatient pediatrics and noted so many patients that would not need admission and hospital treatment if they had only been treated for prevention of illness. That is why I wanted to become an NP – prevent illness, promote wellness to decrease the trauma of inpatient stays.
Most rewarding part of being a NP over the past year: Every moment. I love them all! Helping and serving my patients and their families is extremely rewarding and I feel blessed to be allowed into their lives.
Life motto or saying: Everyone is worthy, everyone is unique, everyone deserves to be cared for.
Favorite part of decorating for the holidays: Eating the desserts!!!
