Free Tax Help for Qualifying Taxpayers 2020

By The Family Health Clinic Team

The tax deadline on April 15th is getting closer, which means it’s time to plan how you’re going to get your taxes done. In case you’re interested in free tax help, the government offers tax assistance programs, The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program.

In this post, we explain each program, who qualifies for the program, and where you can find nearby program providers based on information provided at IRS.gov.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

According to IRS.gov, VITA offers free tax help to those who “earn $55,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.” At VITA sites, IRS-certified volunteers help you with free basic income return preparations with electronic filing to the qualified individuals we mentioned above. If you’re not sure if you qualify, try calling the VITA providers we’ve listed below and discuss your situation with them.

Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program

TCE is a program that gives free tax help particularly for taxpayers who are 60 years of age and older. They specialize in questions about pensions and other issues that seniors face. Some of the TCE sites are operated by the AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide program.
