A conversation with Jim

What are your duties as the Executive Director for the Family Health Clinic?

The Executive Director is responsible for working with a community-based Board of Directors to create the strategic plan for the organization and to carry out that plan.  The role includes relationship-building with many stakeholders – the Health Resources and Services Administration, our primary granting agency, and the Indiana State Department of Health are 2 important partners that help fund the operations of the Family Health Clinics.  We have also built many other relationships over the years with community leaders, health system partners, and collaborating medical professionals.

What drew you to the FHC originally?

I lived in Delphi for 24 years and saw the Family Health Clinic firsthand and knew what an asset the clinic was in the community.  When the position opened, I thought it would be a great fit for my career plans.

How has the FHC changed since?

The health care arena is a constantly changing environment.  Our biggest change is our growth.  In 2009, we had 15 employees at 2 clinic sites in Delphi and Monon and today we have 65 employees at 4 sites that now include Burlington and Wolcott.

What is the favorite part about working for the Family Health Clinic?

I love the fact that we provide high-quality, affordable, and accessible primary health care in the small, rural communities that we serve.  I am lucky to work with a group of dedicated and caring staff members.

What is one of your proudest moments during your time at the Family Health Clinic?

There are many, but I am proud of the fact that we consistently have positive feedback from our patients and from our communities.  We have been recognized as a Patient Centered Medical Home and won several Quality Improvement awards as well.

What do you like about working in the local community?

I like the fact that we care for all patients, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.  We take most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, but for those without health insurance, our services are provided on a sliding scale and discounts are available to those who qualify.  The Family Health Clinics also contribute to the local economies in our communities by providing jobs and supporting local businesses.

Why do you think having health services like the ones the FHC provides is important in the local community?

Primary and preventive health care services are the core of a healthy community and reduce the number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations.  We also take pride in the fact that we build relationships with our patients.

What do you see in the next twenty years for the Family Health Clinic?

Although the landscape of primary health care is always changing, I expect the next 20 years will see continued growth and new opportunities.  Although it’s hard to predict where the Family Health Clinics will be in 20 years, I am excited about the future!

Any last thoughts?

It is a privilege to work at a Community Health Center and I appreciate the support of our Board of Directors, our partners at the Purdue University School of Nursing, and most of all, the communities of Burlington, Delphi, Monon, and Wolcott.
