Why do you need a primary care provider?

By The Family Health Clinic Team

Lately, we’ve been using the term Primary Care Provider in some of our blogs and social media posts. Even if you and your family are currently healthy, having a Primary Care Provider is important for everyone. If you don’t have a Primary Care Provider or want to learn more about what that term means, continue reading below!

What is a Primary Care Provider?

A Primary Care Provider is someone who most likely comes from a family medicine or internal medicine background and specializes in diagnosing, treating, and preventing a wide variety of conditions (Mayo Clinic). They are generally the first point of contact for a patient’s medical and health care needs.

What are the benefits of having a Primary Care Provider?

Some of the benefits of having a Primary Care Provider include:

Staying Healthier – Since you’ll be seeing your provider regularly, you can manage chronic conditions better and have someone who can help you reach personalized health goals.

Having Familiarity with Your Provider – When you go to talk to someone about your health, it’s good to go to someone that knows you and your health history. Your Primary Care Provider will be working to find solutions that are best for you and not just give you a general solution.

Building Trust – By having a Primary Care Provider, you’ll most likely find that over time you will become easier to discuss private medical concerns. You can also feel more confident in your health care, since your Primary Care Provider will know you and help you make health decisions based on your history.

Lower Costs – When you’re regularly seeing your provider who is helping you maintain your health, you’ll most likely have less extreme health situations that result in ER trips or big medical visits which results in lower costs.
